Telecommunications giant América Móvil and Mexico’s telecomm regulator IFT have announced a plan to join forces in following up and implementing solutions to the former’s preponderant position within the sector. The company and the agency will both contribute members to a series of working groups tasked with finding improvements to the implementation and design of asymmetric regulation imposed on América Móvil, evaluating three years of such regulation.
The agency’s stated aim is to help the company accept and support modifications and improvements to various services and processes in the company’s wholesale communications services market. They will also keep an eye on the implementation of new services in order to ensure compliance with the terms, conditions and timetable defined by the regulator.
In March 2017 the IFT ordered América Móvil to divest assets in order to create a new company, charged with administering Telmex’s infrastructure in order to provide fair and equal access to this infrastructure to its competitors. América Móvil is expected to present their plans for this split by the end of May.
