A new initiative by Peru’s authorities will seek to substitute sourcing of milk and dairy products all government assistance programs, such as Qali Warma, directly from small-scale livestock producers, instead of industrial producers such as Grupo Gloria, accused of monopolizing that market and not from large industrial suppliers, said Agriculture and Irrigation Minister José Manuel Hernández. The Supreme Decree on the Regulation of Milk and Dairy Products, which establishes the requirements to be met by foods of bovine origin destined for human consumption, will be published on Wednesday, 14th.
Ivonne Tapia Vivas, president of the coordinating body of the ‘Vaso de Leche’ welfare assistance program, said that the Gloria Group, the country’s largest dairy producer, has a monopoly on the sale of this product for the program, which distributes around 2 million servings daily throughout the country.
The official explained that the program is the main purchaser of milk in Peru, but clarified that it is the municipalities that administer the distribution, and that the organization she presides only proposes the type of product that they must buy.
