Argentina was until recently the only country yet to comment on the massive continent-wide collusion case roiling the tissue paper market. Now, with an announcement by the recently re-formed Competition regulator CNDC, this situation has come to an end.
“We are studying it” said Hector Sena, press spokesman for the Argentine watchdog concerning the scandal that revolves around Chilean company CMPC. Mr. Sena added that no further comments could be made “because these are matters that take some time to clarify, as in any investigation.”
Argentina was the first foreign market for CMPC in 1991. By December 2014 the company controlled around 43% of the tissue paper market in Argentina. CMPC continues to be the market leader, followed by Kimberly-Clark and Celulosa Campana.
Only two other countries with CMPC presence are yet to begin investigations – Mexico and Brazil have not rejected initiating one should uncompetitive effects be seen as reaching their own markets.
