Uber’s upcoming arrival in Argentina drew closer as the company made an open call for driver interviews, in order to begin its Buenos Aires operations in an as-yet unannounced date. The call for potential drivers was published in Uber Argentina’s Facebook page, along with a list of requirements for registration.
“We still don’t have a starting date for our operation, but we want to measure the interest and availability of Argentinians, who may be looking for new work opportunities with the autonomy and flexibility that our company brings to over 400 cities around the world”, said Soledad Lago Rodríguez, Uber’s Communications Manager for the ‘South Cone’ region comprising Uruguay, Chile and Argentina.
Hundreds of taxi drivers responded to the announcement by blocking the streets outside the Hotel Castelar, where aspiring Uber drivers were gathered for a first training and recruitment session. The taxi drivers threw stones, destroying several windows in the hotel.
Uber already has a presence in Latin America, including in Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Chile and Uruguay. In many of these countries – as well as various European and North American cities – the app’s arrival has caused controversial face-offs with traditional taxi drivers, who consider the company to be engaged in unfair competition.
