Canadian mining companies Goldcorp and Teck Resources have announced plans to complete preliminary studies, in late 2017, that may allow the construction of one of the continent’s largest gold & copper extraction projects. According to recent results, the Joint Venture endeavor – to be located in the northern Atacama region – would allow for optimizing the extraction of both minerals, giving the projected mine a useful life-span of at least 32 years.
Goldcorp announced last year that it would consider combining its gold and copper units located at El Morro with Teck’s Relincho copper mine, forming a Joint Venture called Nueva Unión. The move was part of an attempt by Goldcorp to reduce its operating costs in the face of weak commodity prices, as well as strong rejection from local communities.
“The firm is working on several scenarios and development plans in order to complete its preliminary feasibility studies by the end of 2017. The campaigns for gathering baseline environmental and social impact data for the project will begin in the second half of this year” said Nueva Unión.
