A collection of consumer groups and other citizen’s associations have called for a Boycott of the country’s three largest supermarket chains, accused of price-fixing schemes in their sale of fresh chicken. The groups have called on citizens to avoid all stores owned by Cencosud, Walmart and SMU this February 28th, urging them to favor local groceries and family shops.
The call was led by the National Corporation for Consumers and Users (CONADECUS). The organization’s president, Hernán Calderón, has indicated that he expects more people to join the protest given the date, hoping to bring about a new readjustment in the supermarket’s prices.
Ernesto Medina, leader of the “Aquí la Gente” social movement, pointed out the importance of having people show their support for this motion given the background of a proposed law, currently being reviewed by the senate, that would impose prison terms for company executives accused of engaging in anticompetitive agreements. The measure is expected to be passed in coming weeks.
