Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, the London-founded law firm, announced on Thursday that Christine Wilson, a former commissioner of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), will be joining the firm as a senior advisor in its Washington, D.C. office.
Christine Wilson, a Republican, served as an FTC commissioner after being appointed in 2018 by then-President Donald Trump. She stepped down from her position in March 2023 and, in her resignation letter to President Joe Biden, criticized FTC Chair Lina Khan, a Democrat. Wilson’s move to Freshfields marks a significant transition into the private sector, where she will play a pivotal role in expanding the law firm’s expertise in antitrust matters.
Freshfields stated that Wilson’s role will involve assisting senior executives and company boards in navigating complex legal and regulatory challenges. Her extensive experience in the regulatory landscape, gained during her tenure at the FTC, positions her as a valuable asset to clients seeking guidance in an increasingly complex legal environment.

The five-member FTC currently has three Democratic commissioners, including Chair Lina Khan, while nominations for two Republican commissioners are still pending. Wilson’s addition to Freshfields reflects the law firm’s strategic initiative to strengthen its capabilities amid evolving regulatory dynamics, reported Reuters.
Wilson’s association with Freshfields began after her departure from the FTC when the law firm volunteered to provide pro bono legal services for a foundation she launched. The foundation focuses on providing housing and services for survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Freshfields highlighted its commitment to social responsibility and its alignment with Wilson’s philanthropic endeavors.
Speaking about her new role, Wilson expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to work with Freshfields, citing the law firm’s commitment to pro bono work and its engagement with her foundation’s mission. Her relationships formed across various practice groups during this collaboration contributed to her decision to join Freshfields.
