Alejandra Palacios president of Mexico’s Federal Commission for Economic Competition (COFECE) said during a Senate hearing last week that she will instruct the competition agency to keep a close watch on the country’s soon to be liberalized gasoline market, hoping to prevent any anti-competitive practices regardless of when the market is fully opened.
Commissioner Palacios further clarified the agency’s priorities, which lay in resolving and applying all 25 recommendations issued by the COFECE”s investigative branch in July, aimed at creating a competitive and functional gasoline market.
“The success of the energy reforms will not be measurable immediately, but will be seen in the medium term once investment arrives, pushing the development of needed infrastructure and the involvement of larger economic agents (apart from PEMEX) along the whole chain of production” said Palacios.
