Mexico: Gasoline market to be opened up – ‘gradually’

Mexico’s government, through it’s Internal Revenue Secretary, has announced its intentions to free the prices of gasoline throughout the country in those places which sustain the conditions necessary for effective competition to take hold. This changes the previous commitment to fully liberalize gasoline by 2018, replaced by a transition process stretching out to 2019, during which the government will continue to set consumer prices.

“In order to guarantee a gradual and orderly, early liberalization of gasoline and diesel prices, we propose for the sector regulator, the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), along with the Federal Commission for Economic Competition (COFECE), to determine the proper rate of liberalization for prices in different areas of the country”, stated the initiative sent before Mexico’s Congress.

Competition regulator COFECE had previously suggested a zone-based scheme for freeing up the prices of fuels across the country, owing to the vastly different economic, social and infrastructure differences between different regions and cities.
