Peru’s fifth mobile operator has kicked off its operations in the country, showing promising results as it gains ground on its competitors. However, the arrival of Virgin Mobile has not been without critics, who point out that the new service brings little to the table that can’t be found by turning to the other established operators (Telefónica, Claro, Bitel and Entel).
Virgin Mobile won’t sell smartphones directly in Peru, choosing instead to strike deals with local distributors who may sell devices compatible with Virgin Mobile SIM cards. The new company has said it will try to increase the differences with its competitors.
Among the changes expected from the company, Virgin has said “minutes will include all national calls, excluding rural areas and international long distance. Instant messages can connect to all national numbers…”, as well as offering flexible credit re-charging plans and options.
