Peru: INDECOPI weighs supermarket sanctions

Peruvian market regulator INDECOPI has increased the charges pressed against Supermercados Peruanos, Cencosud Retail Peru and Hipermercados Tottus, originally filed in October.

    The decision was made after the regulator detected new violations of market regulations, discovered while reviewing issues arising from the El Niño weather phenomenon. These violations include actions against the Consumer Protection and Defense Code which took place in emergency areas affected by heavy rain last year.

    The Supermarket chains have been accused of charging higher prices at the register than labelled, especially for staple products such as bottled water, canned tuna, rice, noodles, sugar, soda biscuits and toilet paper.
