Peru’s Public Ministry has requested a 12-year prison sentence for the former regional governor of Áncash, César Álvarez Aguilar, over irregularities in the adjudication and construction of the Carhuaz-Chacas-San Luis highway, a project executed by the beleaguered Brazilian company Odebrecht.
The road rehabilitation, improvement and construction work was valued at 404.8 million soles (US $ 124.3 million), and was carried out between December 2010 and September 2013. During the implementation process, several irregularities were detected, such as delivery Of 155 million soles (approximately US $ 47.6 million) as advances for materials and supplies before the contract had been signed.
The anti-corruption prosecutor has also accused eight former officials and representatives of the Brazilian company, Mario Peralta Gibaja and Antenor Kjuro Beizaga, as well as Maria Esther Basurco Núñez de Freyre, representative of the Consorcio-Huaylas, the company in charge of supervising the work.
