Romania’s Competition Authority Approves Acquisition of Meat Product Retailers by Abatorul Peris

 |  May 21, 2024

Romania’s competition authority has given the green light for the acquisition of three Romanian meat products retailers —Almado Total Distribution, Cathedral Distribution, and Policalita — by local meat processing company Abatorul Peris. The announcement was made on Monday, following a thorough review.

The Competition Council confirmed that the transaction does not pose significant concerns regarding competition within the Romanian market. This approval allows Abatorul Peris to proceed with integrating the operations of Almado Total Distribution, Cathedral Distribution, and Policalita into its business.

The three companies are currently owned by Romanian entrepreneur Alin-Georgian Zamfira. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Abatorul Peris’s market position and expand its distribution network across Romania.

Despite this strategic expansion, Abatorul Peris has faced financial challenges. In 2022, the company reported a net loss of 17.5 million lei (approximately $3.82 million or 3.52 million euro) on a net turnover of 343.8 million lei, according to data from Romania’s finance ministry. The acquisition may provide an opportunity for Abatorul Peris to leverage the new assets to improve its financial performance.

The approval marks a significant step in the Romanian meat industry’s consolidation, potentially leading to increased efficiencies and enhanced product offerings for consumers. The market will closely watch how Abatorul Peris navigates the integration of its new acquisitions and addresses its financial hurdles in the coming months.
