José María Marín Quemada, President of Spain’s competition and industry regulator CNMC, spoke on Friday to defend the unified model followed by the agency, expounding on its “absolutely undeniable” advantages. In doing so, Mr. Marín showed his rejection of a motion promoted by the PSOE party proposing a break-up of the agency. The motion has already drawn support from across the board, with PP and Ciudadanos promoting similar moves.
“I have always believed in a unified model for competencies, because of its absolutely undeniable advantages” said Mr. Marín, explaining that the model allows for building institutions “of a particular size”, such as the 500-worker strong CNMC, with a budget of around 60 million euros per year.
“The scope of business is changing, and taking on completely different forms” continued Mr. Marín, presenting this as evidence of the “multifaceted reality” of a model that recognizes the interaction between different sector models into a different “dimension”. Because of this, he concluded, the vision of the Institution itself must also be different, adapting to these changes.
