The call for government regulation of artificial intelligence by corporate leaders in the field is gaining momentum. Several influential figures have voiced their support for regulatory measures:
- Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasized the need for a new agency that licenses and oversees AI efforts above a certain scale of capabilities, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, who previously endorsed the idea of a digital regulatory agency, echoed Altman’s call, urging companies to take responsibility while urging governments to act swiftly.
- Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, announced an agreement with the European Union (EU) to develop voluntary behavioral standards, referred to as an “AI Pact,” ahead of the EU’s implementation of the AI Act.
The significance of these corporate leaders advocating for regulation was underscored by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Richard Durbin, who described it as historic to witness representatives of major corporations pleading for regulation.
