Visa Warned Of POS Malware

Visa reportedly issued warnings twice in 2013 to retailers, including Target, that a point-of-sale (POS) malware attack was a serious threat.

    The revelation suggests that Target and others impacted by the data breach did not take adequate steps to protect themselves once the warning was issued, Daily Finance reported on Jan. 21.

    One of the bulletins Visa distributed sent out by Visa outlines many of the characteristics that would later define the Target breach: A piece of malware that is able to compromise information that passes through a card reader-based POS system.

    ”Visa is issuing this alert to make clients aware of new malware information and malicious IPs, and to remind Visa merchants to secure their payment processing (and non-payment) networks from unauthorized access,” the network wrote in the release.
