Elon Musk said in a series of tweets that Apple has “mostly” stopped advertising on Twitter and has threatened to remove Twitter from the App Store.
Tagging Apple CEO Tim Cook in one tweet, Musk asked Monday (Nov. 28), “What’s going on here?”
As this was written, Cook hadn’t replied on Twitter.
In other tweets, Musk said Apple had “mostly” stopped advertising on the platform, that the firm should publish “censorship actions it has taken” and that it won’t tell Twitter why it has threatened to remove it from the App Store.
Reuters reported Monday that while Apple had not confirmed the threat to remove Twitter from its store, the company has removed apps like Gab and Parler in the past.
It restored Parler after the app changed its practices around content and moderation, according to the report.
In regard to advertising, the Reuters report said that about 90% of Twitter’s revenue comes from ads and that in addition to Apple reducing its ad buy over the last month, several brands had paused or stopped their own advertising.
Apple did not immediately respond to PYMNTS’ request for comment.
These tweets come about three weeks after Musk said in a tweet that Twitter had seen a “massive drop in revenue” due to activist groups pressuring advertisers after he acquired the social media platform.
Activists have been protesting potential changes in how Twitter will moderate content after the purchase, and a number of advertisers have moved away from the platform.
This happened even though the platform had tried to “appease” activists, Musk said at the time in a tweet.
In related news, Musk said Monday that Twitter will soon make a second attempt at launching a verification service, following a botched launch that saw a number of users impersonating celebrities and companies.
