Day Two of National Small Business Week has officially begun. Today, MasterCard and Habitat for Humanity will together launch a pilot program in Flint, Michigan that will help build houses for families who manage home-based businesses, according to a Habitat release. The initiative aims to escalate employment and income opportunities for low-income families.
“Small businesses are a key driver of economic growth and revitalization in communities,” said Eugene DeSilva, senior vice president, global small and medium enterprises, MasterCard, in the release. “Together, Habitat and MasterCard seek to expand the program and help Habitat affiliates support their communities in even more meaningful ways.”
The MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth is providing a $400,000 grant to fund the construction of these workspaces, as well as “to increase Habitat’s capacity to replicate the model across the country.” Thanks to the program, which stems from the development and success of the Genesse County Habitat for Humanity’s work/live model, small business owners like Scott Hempel and Tyler Bienlein will have a fresh new space for their gaming store.
“This new program is helping our dreams become reality,” said Bienlein in the release. “We are grateful to Habitat for Humanity International and MasterCard for supporting us and other small business owners like us.”
