ChatGPT Mobile App Downloaded 110 Million Times in 6 Months

Six months after ChatGPT became available in its first native mobile version, its mobile app has been downloaded more than 110 million times and generated $28.6 million in global consumer spending.

The OpenAI-created generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot’s mobile app racked up those totals since being launched on iOS in May and on Google Play two months later, mobile data analytics provider data.ai said in a Thursday (Nov. 30) blog post

ChatGPT went live on the web on Nov. 30, 2022, six months before the launch of its first mobile app, according to the post.

The app’s global spend has been driven by a “relatively pricey” monthly subscription, the post said. ChatGPT Plus, the sole in-app purchase for the ChatGPT app, is billed at $19.99 per month in the United States.

“This is greater than many music and streaming services, but the platform is clearly driving value for some of its users,” Randy Nelson, senior director of market insights at data.ai, said in the post.

In addition, ChatGPT Plus has been getting new features and content that are not available to users of the free version, per the post.

Over the past five weeks, the number of iOS and Android downloads have been totaling more than 4 million per week, according to the post. During the week the Android version was released, joining the existing iOS one, their combined downloads totaled 18 million.

By country, India leads the way in terms of the number of downloads, accounting for 18% of all downloads, the post said. The United States accounts for 17.5%.

Over the six months since the launch of its iOS version, the ChatGPT app has been at or near the top among AI chatbots on mobile in terms of the total number of downloads, consumer spend and sessions spent interacting with it since their launch, per the post.

As of Nov. 22, ChatGPT is ranked No. 1 in terms of downloads; No. 2 in terms of consumer spend, behind Ask AI; and No. 3 in terms of total global sessions behind Character AI and Chai, the post said.

“With interest that’s clearly not subsiding, and new reasons to explore its premium offering surfacing at a steady pace, ChatGPT stands to add tens of millions more installs and revenue by the time its one-year iOS release date nears,” Nelson said in the post.

When beginning the rollout of its ChatGPT app in May, six months after launching the chatbot on the web, OpenAI said: “Since the release of ChatGPT, we’ve heard from users that they love using ChatGPT on the go.”
