Samsung Electronics is launching a new digital wallet and merging its payments and biometric identification apps to enable Galaxy smartphone users to store boarding passes, credit and debit cards, cryptocurrencies, digital keys, passwords and more.
The Samsung Wallet app will integrate Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass and is currently available in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S., with more countries being added soon, according to a Thursday (June 16) press release.

The digital wallet is secured by Samsung Knox, the company’s “defense-grade” security, and uses an open ecosystem to integrate with the Samsung Blockchain Wallet for crypto monitoring and SmartThings to unlock doors.
“Samsung Wallet is bringing a new level of everyday convenience to mobile devices with a totally safe and secure environment for storing digital keys, cards and more,” Samsung Electronics EVP and Head of Digital Life, MX Business Jeanie Han said in the release.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to open ecosystems, we will continue to expand on the capabilities of Samsung Wallet by working closely with our trusted partners and developers,” Han said.
The functionality of Samsung Pass is part of the wallet and stores passwords and biometric information, enabling users to log into apps and services. It also lets users check the value of their cryptocurrencies across various exchanges. Official IDs, such as mobile driver’s licenses and student IDs, are expected to be supported by the end of this year.

With SmartThings and Samsung’s partnerships with home security companies, users can add digital home keys to lock and unlock their doors with a Galaxy device. Samsung Wallet also supports digital car keys on select BMW, Genesis and Hyundai models to enable users to lock and unlock cars, start engines and more.
