The new iPhone is finally out, and Apple fans have already had some time to explore the changes and upgrades of the new mobile device. But for businesses, industry experts said there are a few things corporate users of the iPhone 6s should know when using the device to run their companies.
A report by TechRepublic released last Friday (Sept. 25) pointed out several aspects of the newest Apple software upgrade that will be fueling the new iPhone (and earlier versions of the device) that will impact the enterprise.
The OS X 5.0.4 release will include an upgraded capability to capture data from iCloud. Small businesses can enable the data caching service, and Apple automates data aggregation without manual input into a server. It’s a feature that is now available for iCloud data (and not just the data stored on the phone), allowing much of corporate workflows — like files, apps and other user data — to be stored in the cloud.
Another new feature for the upgraded OS, reports pointed out, is a capability to more seamlessly manage the deployment of corporate apps that run on Apple mobile devices. Reports said Apple has upgraded its VPP deployment to streamline enterprise app management — before, users like schools and health providers had to manually manage each Apple ID and each device running the app. Now, the OS allows VPP apps to link directly to an Apple mobile device and to be transferred from one device to another, independent of individual Apple IDs.
Several changes have been made to Apple’s DEP (device enrollment program, which is Apple’s venture to help businesses and institutions issue Apple devices to their workforces). Reports said the OS upgrade has heightened account management for DEP devices, as well as issued upgrades just for DEP devices, which allows administrators to automatically update the software of all DEP devices they manage.
