Walmart Canada announced that it has expanded its mobile pickup service in 22 additional stores.
The company plans to expand the feature to all Walmart Canada Grocery Pickup store locations sometime next year.
“Walmart is always looking for innovative approaches to help our customers save time and money and we’re constantly trying new things,” Lee Tappenden, president and CEO of Walmart Canada, said in a press release. “We’re thrilled to offer the Mobile Check-in technology to customers, potentially shaving valuable minutes off their online grocery pickup experience. Early next year we’ll also trial Pickup Towers — another way we are using our stores to offer convenience and time saving options to our customers.”
The new Walmart Grocery Pickup locations include stores in Quebec City; Regina, Saskatchewan; Victoria, British Columbia; Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford, Nova Scotia; and Moncton and Dieppe, New Brunswick.
Through the service, shoppers place their online grocery orders via Walmart.ca/Grocery or the Walmart mobile app and pick them up on the same day at their selected store.
The retailer also announced plans to introduce Pickup Towers to the Canadian market in early 2019, with two test locations in Oakville, Ontario and Mississauga, Ontario. The retailer debuted the first of the giant self-service kiosks in the fall of 2016 in a Bentonville, Arkansas store.
To use the Pickup Towers, which are 16 feet tall and approximately 8 feet wide, customers place an order online and receive a barcode on a digital recipe. When they enter the store, they scan the barcode from their phones on the machine’s scanner to pick up the order in a process that takes less than 60 seconds. The Pickup Towers are just for customers using the buy-online-pick-up-in-store service.
Walmart Canada operates a growing chain of 411 stores nationwide serving more than 1.2 million customers each day. Walmart Canada’s flagship online store, Walmart.ca is visited by more than 750,000 customers daily.
