To offer its clothing rental service to travelers, Rent the Runway is collaborating with Marriott’s W Hotels brand to roll out a rental experience at the W South Beach, W Aspen, W Hollywood, and W Washington D.C. The platform has been working with other companies such as Nordstrom and WeWork to grow its reach, CNBC reported.
“This idea of being able to show up on vacation … and have the perfect clothing for what you want to wear, is pretty magical,” Rent the Runway COO Maureen Sullivan said, according to CNBC. “The use case of being able to travel light and not have to [pack] … is such an obvious utility for us.”
Travelers will have the choice when they arrive to pay a charge of $69 and select four choices from the curated selection of Rent the Runway to wear during their trips. The climate and activities such as skiing will be considered for the clothing selections. Travelers can leave the clothes in their room when they check out.
The sharing economy platform will also have “mini closets” that have different outfits in the event sizes don’t work or users want to add more products. The idea is to expand to other platforms in the portfolio of W Hotels. Rent the Runway is also looking into other companies to work with similarly.
In separate news, Rent the Runway was putting drop boxes in Los Angeles Nordstrom stores. The drop boxes were to be at three Nordstrom locations, with one that will also be brought to the retailer’s full-line store at The Grove per reports in June.
Sullivan said per a report at the time, “Our philosophy is we are only going to do things that are convenient.” Sullivan also noted that the company is going where “our customers shop or do spend time.” Its customers typically return their items through the mail in a box.
