Lululemon Athletica Inc., the Canadian athletic apparel retailer, has expanded its Like New trade-in and resale program, the company announced Tuesday, (April 12).
Starting on Earth Day (April 22), the program will be available across the United States. The rollout follows a pilot last year in Texas and California, and the initiative reinvests 100% of profits to support making all its products with sustainable materials by 2030.
“We’re deeply committed to creating quality products built to last and that are better for people and the planet,” Celeste Burgoyne, president, Americas and global guest innovation, said in a statement. She added that the company has seen “incredible momentum” from its pilot program.
Lululemon said it has a multi-year strategy to create an equitable, sustainable future, with a goal to minimize environmental impact, contribute to a healthier world and generate long-term value.
The Like New initiative was developed to extends the life of products and ensures each item gets its full use. Customers can trade in Lululemon clothing in exchange for a virtual gift card at one of nearly 400 participating U.S. stores and shop resale products on its website.
In 2021, six months after the rollout of its sweeping corporate sustainability agenda, the retailer unveiled its first-ever venture to resell gently used clothes.

In announcing its “Like New” reCommerce initiative, the retailer joined a movement within the apparel and footwear industry to reduce waste and extend product life, while designing products that are said to be better for people and the planet.
At the same time, the retailer said it will also launch a limited-edition “Earth Dye” line of clothing that will use environmentally friendly dyes made from the upcycled waste of oranges, beets and saw palmetto trees.
