First National Bank of Omaha announced that it is not renewing a contract with the National Rifle Association (NRA) to offer customers an NRA-branded Visa card.
The move comes after the shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead. The NRA has come under intense criticism for its opposition to stricter gun laws.
“The NRA supports efforts to prevent those who are in danger to themselves or others from getting access to firearms,” the group said in a statement. “At the same time, we will continue to oppose gun control measures that only serve to punish law-abiding citizens; these are not mutually exclusive or unachievable goals.”
Many have called for a boycott of companies that do business with the group. With that in mind, ThinkProgress listed a group of companies that gave special discounts and deals to NRA members. First National Bank of Omaha offered two NRA cards with a $40 bonus and promoted it as “enough to reimburse your one-year NRA membership!”
Customers lashed out at the bank via Twitter, promising to take their business elsewhere if First National didn’t cut ties with the NRA.
“Customer feedback has caused us to review our relationship with the NRA,” said bank spokesman Kevin Langin, according to CBS News. Langin would not offer further information, such as when the contract would expire.
First National Bank has offices in Nebraska, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota and Texas.
ThinkProgress noted 22 companies that support the NRA, including Hertz, Norton, Enterprise, FedEx, LifeLock, True Car, Avis, Budget, Alamo, National, Life Line Screening, Allied, North American Van Lines, SimpliSafe and Starkey Laboratories.
